The Aim of the Centre

The Open Door Community Project aims to provide a welcoming, multipurpose Community Centre for local residents and the people of Preston. We encourage and prioritise the use of the centre by groups serving the local community, and helping the disadvantaged. We are a project of the Salvation Army Preston Corps, partially supported by the Avencentral SRB6 Partnership.

 SA Red Shield                                                       AvenCentral Logo

The Salvation Army is an integral part of the universal Christian Church. Our Message is based on the Bible. Our motivation is the love of God as revealed in Jesus Christ. We combine a fervent joyous religious faith with a practical efficient social service...not just in Preston but world wide. We welcome and offer care to all people, male or female, young or old, regardless of religion, race, or culture.

If you are trying to set up a new community group, or sustain a service for people in need we are willing and able to offer you advice and support, and possibly some concessions on rent. We may be able to help you draft a constitution, service your meetings, apply for funding, produce publicity or manage your finances or mailing lists, either directly or through friends and colleagues in our networks in the city. OUTDOOR FACILITIES

In 2006, we developed the first stage of our Open Garden and a Children’s Playground . The aim is to create an oasis of calm and colour in the heart of the inner city. The public are welcome to make use of our grounds in daylight hours, with the added assurance that everywhere is monitored by CCTV cameras.

Stage 1 of the garden was made possible thanks to generous grants from LCC’s Green Partnership Award Scheme

and PCC’s Central Area Forum                          Preston City Council logo

Teams of volunteers and workers from

·        Impact Preston

·        The department of work and pensions

·        Preston Disc

·        The Probation Service

·        The Volunteer Exchange at Preston CVS

·        Other individuals including, Les James (our chief garden volunteer), Andy Bounds, Mel Rosebery (garden designer), Harvey Thorpe, Steve Smith (Preston City Council Parks and Gardens Dept), Katharine Cowley (LCC environment Dept).

And by supplying materials and plants free or at discount rates: Clifton Marsh Landfill site, Garden Centre Plants, Barton Grange Garden Centre, Oak Nurseries. BK fencing, B&Q Preston. Various members of The Salvation Army corps

We hope to work on and complete stage 2 by about Easter 2007.thanks to further funding from the Lancashire County Council Environment Dept.

The Children’s Playground

On the other side of the building our playground for children under 11 is also complete and in use. It is open in daylight hours for use by any child under adult supervision, and for children attending activities at the centre.  For extra security the playground and surrounding area is monitored by TV cameras which record what is going on 24/7.

We are grateful to

The Lancashire Environmental Fund, whose grant paid for just under half of the cost:

Lancashire Environmental Fund is a partnership between SITA UK Ltd, Lancashire County Council, The Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside and Community Futures.  The Fund is financed by Landfill Tax donations from SITA UK Ltd and Neales Waste Management Ltd together with a contribution from Lancashire County Council. For further information on the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme visit www.ltcs.org.uk Formed as a non-profit company in 1998 the Fund has allocated over £13m to more than 420 environmental, community and waste management projects throughout the county to date.

The team from Wicksteed who supplied and installed the equipment.

CAR PARK:

We also have a car park which (only between 9am and 6pm  on weekdays, and subject to availability on an hour by hour basis) may be used by members of the public who purchase IN ADVANCE FROM OUR OFFICE a £2 all day permit. Vehicles parked without a permit at any time are liable to a £60 penalty charge.

NEW FOR SUMMER 2007 OUR COMPUTER SUITE

Our exciting new project for 2007 is to install and commission a computer learning suite in room GP4. Funding has recently been confirmed from Avencentral Partnership, the St. Georges and Town Centre Neighbourhood Management Board and the Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities Fund which will allow us to find a supplier and start work in April. We hope to be up and running by midsummer.

The new suite will allow us to run classes and activities and run open access learning and browsing sessions for our centre users and the local community. Because the equipment will include lots of video and photographic items the suite will be an excellent base for multimedia learning, community arts projects and digital photography clubs. We are working with recognised adult education providers to develop a programme of lifelong learning activities, and it will be possible for organisations to hire the facilities for one off training events.

Volunteering Opportunities @ The Open Door Community Project

·        Would you like to give some time in voluntary work serving needy people and building up the local community in Preston’s Inner City?

·        Whether you can spare just a couple of hours a week or can offer to work full time for a month or even a year, there are plenty of opportunities to help at the Open Door Project.

·        You will have the satisfaction of knowing you are doing something worthwhile and useful, while at the same time meeting new people, growing in confidence and learning new skills which could be valuable in the workplace or in other parts of your life.

Some of the Tasks which Volunteers can do include

·        Helping prepare and serve food at our drop ins and lunch club.

·        Work in our charity shops in Plungington and Chorley

·        Helping with maintenance of the building and grounds

·        Helping with the administration of our proposed depot for Big Issue sellers

·        Involvement in fundraising and campaigning efforts

·        Helping in running activities for children and young people

·        Helping with publicity and marketing of our activities, ranging from delivering leaflets to designing brochures and web pages.

·        Setting up and running your own new community group or activity in the centre

For some of these activities it will be necessary to undergo training which we can provide and/or agree to CRB checks in order to comply with our Child Protection Policy.

Some (but not all) of the activities have an explicitly Christian ethos and for these you would need to be at least broadly in sympathy with our aims and beliefs.

Who can be a volunteer?

We welcome male and female volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, students, employed and not employed people including people with disabilities or learning difficulties.

We are usually able to cover all reasonable expenses you may incur and provide any equipment or clothing you may need to do the job.

How to offer your help

Please contact….our community co-ordinator Greg Smith to discuss the opportunities which are currently available and the time and skills you would be willing to offer..
