As with the Previous Page, Unique
Individuals, this Collection is made up of those Films & Series
that Doesn't have a lot in common with the Other Categories (see 'Links'
below).
In some Respects this makes them 'Special' in their own right. Primarily, that each is 'Unique', or contains 'Uniqueness', within the Genre of Sci - Fi & Fantasy. Something that is Fast becoming a Rarity. The Twilight Zone & Outer Limits are included as they cover a vast Number of Different Stories. These Programmes would not go anywhere else & did not, to my way of thinking, warrant their own Section. Things change, so who knows what the future will bring. The Rest are likely to Remain 'Unique' as there would be little else that could be done to their 'Plots' to make another Film or Series, etc. worth while making. I am ready to be Surprised, so don't let that stop you from Trying - just bear my comments in mind if you do. |

I found Dark Star to be a most unusual Film. Refreshingly
Different to most Sci - Fi Films, even by Today's vast array of Contributions.
The Basic Story Line, based on one by Alan Dean Foster (for more on his Spellsinger Books click Here) who also Wrote the Alien Stories, concerns the Lives of the Crew. One of them is more of less Dead, and the others have far more serious Problems - namely that, after 20 years in Space, they are just not getting along. The Ship itself is falling apart & has Sustained even more Damage. On top of that Bomb 20 is Malfunctioning after being exposed to an Electric Storm, 'Smart Technology' gone astray so to speak, and the Humans attempt to get it to Disarm before it tries to Fulfil its Function, ie Detonate! Unfortunately it is still attached to the Launch Mechanism. The Conversation with the Bomb was the Highlight of the Film for me. This Film probably won't appeal to People who Prefer Lasers, Transporters & Bizarre Aliens, although it has a certain amount of this sort of thing - if you can call a large balloon thing with claws an Alien. This should not be held against it. It has its moments. This is probably why so few People I meet who are Sci - Fi Fans have so much difficulty even remembering the Title of this Film, let alone the Content. This happened to me when starting these Pages. I could remember the Story Line and took about A Day to recall the Title. |

A vague memory stirred & I then Remembered a Mini-Series
called the Martian Chronicles, based on a Story by Ray Bradbury.
It's been a long time since I've watched them so my recollections are a bit vague. I remember Rock Hudson being in it - a distinctly different type of Film for him. I was Surprised at how well he came across. I'm sure there are Fans of his out there who would Name plenty of Movies that have 'Good' Rock Hudson Performances. Just bear in mind that I have limited my 'Choice' of Films, etc. to Sci - Fi & Fantasy - I know my LOSS ;-( Apparently Roddy McDowell - who I don't remember being in it! I think I've got some Checking out to do. To Read about Roddy's, dare I say it, Best Films - Planet of the Apes. I do remember Liking the 'Feel' of the Shows. It was definitely 'Arty'. I did especially like the 'Sand Yachts', for want of a better term - I do need to do some Checking, don't I. Well it's down to the Video Shop, I suppose. |

This Series for a number of Reasons. Foremost was the mixture
of Intrigue, Science (Fiction ?) & Effects. I found it reminded me
of quite a number of other Ideas from elsewhere. Yet managed to Retain
its own particular 'Style' & 'Feel'.
Sydney Bloom, played by Lori Singer (Who also Starred as Kassandra in the Film Warlock), invents a means of Entering into other People's Consciousness via Virtual Reality. Whilst there She can Influence those People, as a Dream can Affect Your Mood Upon Waking - well mine Can! Some of the VR (Virtual Reality) scenes were particularly Bizarre. The reason for this gets Clearer as the Series Progresses - at least I think it does. The Weird Backdrops & Outlandish Colours are certainly Reminiscent of older 'Styles' given a new Twist. It did take some Effort, on my part, to hang on the Story Line - this was a Pleasant Change (one which Encouraged me to Use my Memory) from the 'Usual' 1 or 2 Episode Stories that 'Most' other Shows have to offer. |

I have found the Outer Limits Continues to Surprise
me with its Story Lines.
A Major Issue for me is how something Ends (if you've read anything else from D - space you may not be surprised by that - I moan enough about the Subject). The Outer Limits has very seldom disappointed me in that respects. I find that their 'Endings' seem Plausible, dare it say - Logical. This is not to say that everyone would agree (such agreement is Death to me) it's that they come across as well Thought Out & not just a 'Means to an End'. The Stories, themselves, are Interesting from a Sci - Fi point of view as well as a Scientific & Moral perspective. The Two examples that spring to mind are; The Sentence with David Hyde Pierce (Niles Crane from Frasier). Dr Henson, (Pierce) creates a Machine that Enables Prison Sentences to be carried out Quickly in the Prisoner's own mind. They would then emerge from their 'Confinement', after only a few Hours having 'Served Their Time' which to them could be Years (or until the had 'Learn Their Lesson'). The Dilemma is what would happen to an 'Innocent' Person who was not 'Guilty' was 'Put Inside'. Although you Knew Pierce was 'Inside' I thought it was very well 'Handled' & makes the Point that - None of Us are Truly 'Guilt - Free'. The other Episode, The New Breed, starred Richard Thomas (of Waltons Fame) who developed 'Nanobots' which could be Introduced into Someone & would set about Repairing Damaged Parts of the Body. All sounds Good until the 'Nanobots' set out to 'Improve' & 'Protect' their 'Host' with some quite Alarming Results. The, not so, hidden message is that 'Natural' Development is Preferable over 'Manufactured' ones. If this was the case there would not be Half the Breeds of Dogs or Horses that are in Existence Today. Not that I agree with Breeding in that Fashion, I'm just aware that the Temptation has always been there. Both Stories are 'Typical' of what I like about the Series, so if you haven't seen any lately, I think it is worth the Effort. |

LEXX:
The Dark Zone is Favourite Series of recent Years. It was
a Wonderful Break from the Usual Sci - Fi Scene. I thought that 'Everything'
in Sci
- Fi
had been
'Covered'
- I was Wrong!
If you haven't seen it - Do So. Don't expect Lasers, Teleporters or Battalions of Warring Extra - Terrestrials, just a totally Bizarre Collection of Characters & Situations. The Characters include: LEXX - a Insectoid Star Ship Kai - a 'Dead' Assassin, last of the Brunen-G; Zev - a Love Slave whose Restructuring went Amiss; 790 - a Zev infatuated Robot's Head; & Last, and certainly least, Stanley Tweedle - reluctant Ship's Captain, formerly Security Guard Class 4, Arch Traitor who caused the Deaths of 100 Star Systems (although He insists it was only 96) & previous to that Assistant Deputy Backup Courier. Definitely 'Adult' Viewing and for those of you who really Enjoy letting go of the 'Norms' and don't mind Talking Brains. The Story is about Good verses Evil, which is about the only Familiar bit about the Show. The Characters, listed above, are being Pursued by His Divine Shadow, Foul Master of the Universe who was not Pleased to have his Latest Creation & 'Ultimate Weapon', LEXX, stolen from him. Prophecy also States that Kai, last of the Brunen-G, will also be the one who Ends His Shadow's Evil Empire. If this doesn't make you Curious, then there's probably Nothing that Will. Throughout the Series there are Appearances from some well known Faces, including Rutger Hauer (of Blade Runner fame) & Tim Curry (from one my all - time Favourite Films, The Rocky Horror Picture Show). The Sci - Fi must of the Nineties! The Second Series, 20 hour long Episodes, took a bit of getting used to. Zev was replaced by another Persona in one of the most Unique Methods I have encountered, Recreated by the Plant Entity Lyka after the Original was Killed. A new Villain is Introduced, Mantrid - a Human Head with a Machine Body, partly Possessed by the Insect Consciousness - How's that for mind - blowing! Some of the Episodes were difficult to get on with, others were Excellent. Although I wasn't too thrill at the Initial Changes it became easier to accept as the Series Progressed. Although they never quite matched the Original Series. Probably the most interesting Episode was Brigadoom which offered a Musical History of the Brunen-G & Kai's role leading up to the attack by the Forces of His Divine Shadow. The most confusing bit was the Episodes The Web & The Net. These were basically the same Stories with a slightly different Perspective & caused me some confusion because I thought I had forgotten to set the Video Player. Overall an Excellent Show which wins on Originality in a time of Sameness where the main Emphasis seems to be Mass Appeal rather than Creativity - Full Marks! I have seen most (all?) of Series 3, although not likely to see 4 as it hasn't taken off in the UK as much as it has elsewhere. I've heard that there isn't even going to be DVD's for 3 (VHS only) available in the UK & no 4 at all - absolutely gutted - this is a real bummer & another reason for releasing Region 0 (no Geographical Restrictions) for lesser known Shows, etc. LEXX Official Web Site |
