more The easiest way to explain this Page (I hope :-) is to tell the story behind it...

I was in an Assistant Branch Secretary for our local UNISON Members (National UNISON Web Site), some Members had been having difficulties with one of their Managers and their 'management' skills, etc. (nothing new there then). As a 'solution' the Manager had asked the Staff to compile a list of the problems they were experiencing with them:

  1. What is the problem
  2. How does it affect you
  3. What the solution
The Members were given a form, with the above column headers, and asked to fill it in and return it. The Members had filled in this form and a little unsure as what to do with it and what the potential fallout would be, etc...

My response was one of extreme caution based on the following points:

  1. As this was written down it in effect would be seen as 'law'
  2. Any errors, omissions and/or misunderstandings would have to be lived with for quite some time and difficult to retract.
  3. Managers are there to solve their own problems of managing things
  4. Anyone who asks to be told what is 'wrong' with them doesn't really want to know!
It is the last point that is the most relevant to this Page.

So what I recommended was that they ask for an informal meeting (quite a few people, Managers or otherwise, have difficulty with this concept, that's an issue for another place though. Anyway I suggested that the Members use their 'list' as a guide in this meeting and that it not be presented as requested. I never did get any feedback from them so I don't know how it went (that's usual as well I'm afraid :-(

So back to this Page...

It dawned on me that point 4 (above) was something worthy of 'study' as it presented me with one of these life - statements that I like to look at when I have some free 'head - time' (amongst all the other things going on, that is ;-)

So I decided to use this Page to test the theory out. I have asked friends that have known me for some significant time to come up with a brief snippet of how I am to them, within the guidelines I set up on the D - cipher Main Page.

I also thought that a lot of what was written would be subject to how each of us perceive particular words and their connotations. So I thought I would compile a list of 'keywords' that have been used to describe me over the years, which leads me to this first Section, following the (slightly altered) Disclaimer...

 

word I hope that this is a success attempt at pointing out my own faults before I give others the chance (see D-scribe, below). Although most of the words have been spoken by others in reference to my aim is to be as objective as possible. 

I have put in parts of a Dictionary's definition of the words, so that, as much as possible, we are all working with the same information. Some words will have their own connotations to those who have said them, some of them may differ, and some used will be seen as positive or negative to a few - I thought this would take some of the heat off me (you can take up any issues with the Dictionary's Writers ;-)

I will not mention the Dictionary hear as I need to check out the Copyright situation. I may need to seek their permission, if they are unwilling to let me do that I will obviously remove their stuff and make up my own. I am not sure whether I want to be seen as actively publicising someone's business either, so we'll have to see.
You could argue (probably wont do you much good though, see Aggressive ;-) that by including the My Comments bit I am no longer remain unbiased - hopefully it will provide some mildly amusing bits to see you through the rather boring process of Dictionary reading (don't tell your friends ;-)

Facetious trying but failing to be amusing or using inappropriate humour. I always assumed that it was because no-one understood the Fridge-Jokes ;-( maybe not a funerals, weddings and other formal occasions?

I have created a word of my own... Pessoptimistic ...a belief that things will ultimately go negatively yet desperately hoping that something positive will occur.

Witty 1 the capacity for inventive thought and quick understanding; keen intelligence. 2 a natural aptitude for using words and ideas in a quick and inventive way to create humour... 1 oh I like this one, I like it a lot. 2 this seems like the place to stop, on a plus.

 

scrb Well, all I can say is that I've hit a bit of a snag with this Section. People have been very reluctant to hand over the goods, so to speak.

It could be that they have decided that I am the Manager referred to at the top of this Page and that I would not be able the handle the truth, that the events of the last year or so have made them a bit reluctant to risk upsetting my fragile ego (see What Now?) or that the Persona they know as D is not quite who they originally thought I was.

I certainly have learned that I have not progressed as much as I thought. This last year has given me a lot to think about so, I suppose, it has for others as well.

It could also be that I've asked for too much, after all it does come with certain risks and, if you're not used to it, Summing Up another Individual in a few sentences is very difficult. Even with the years of practice I've had I certainly haven't mastered the art. This Web Site has taken far longer than I'd originally anticipated and I've not covered everything I could, so maybe that's it, who knows?

Therefore I must leave this Section for a while and wait until I'm more the D that most have know. Just before I go I would like to share my own thoughts on myself just because I can then say someone has contributed to this Section, even if it is me...

So far this is the nearest I've got to a working definition of who I am on the inside and out. It goes some way to explaining the 'conflicts' I experience from time to time and the need I have to achieve a (sense of) balance between. Live long and prosper you %!@+& ;-)

So far I haven't anything significant to write here as my Site hasn't been online in its current form for all that long. A few comments I've had from friends & colleagues have been along the lines of...

  • Too many words...
  • I liked the humour...
  • I didn't know you liked Rocky Horror that much...
So there we have it, so far that is. I'm going to be starting my new Open University course in FEB 02 so there'll only be the occasional update, every couple of months or so, until the end of OCT 02.
