The Trustees of Kibworth Harcourt Windmill met for their annual meeting on 21 February 1997 when it was decided that the windmill will again be open to the public on National Mills Day, Sunday 11 May 1997, from 11 to 4. Entry is free but any donation, no matter how small, placed in the box by the entrance gate will help with maintenance costs. Park on the Langton Road please and DO try and visit this beautiful and significant landmark in our village. It is part of our heritage. Last year there were some 300 visitors on Open Day. Thank you to all those who attended.
Other news is very important. The mill is owned by The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) though it sits on privately owned land. SPAB are intending to apply now for National Heritage Funds to restore the mill to a fully operational unit. To do this it will be necessary to show that there is a local commitment to having a working windmill in Kibworth Harcourt by opening it to the public on a more regular basis. At this stage one a month during the summer months is envisaged.
To achieve this objective some help in supervising its opening and attending to visitors is required and it is proposed that a 'Friends of Kibworth Harcourt Windmill' group is formed. This will not be a charity or a fund-raising organisation but a group of people who are willing to help in learning about and opening the mill. Full guidance will be given and interest in forming such a group is growing rapidly.
On 11 May (Open Day) notices will be posted at the mill about the 'Friends' and those who are keen will be able to record their interest on their visit if they had not previously contacted David. Very soon after 11 May the first meeting of the 'Friends' will be called formally to set up the group. Do join in what we feel sure will be a very worth while venture. Thank you.
