A few years ago we made a ski trip across northern USA from Minnesota to the Rocky mountains, through the 'Badland' country of North Dakota and Montana and the Theodore Roosevelt National Park .For the first part of the holiday we stayed with friends in Northern Minnesota and skied at the local resort of 'Giant's Ridge. In this part of the world, in February temperatures can fall as low as -30 degrees Fahrenheit and, coming from the mild, wet climate of South Western England we really noticed the cold, crisp, dry, stillness of a mid-continental winter. Here you can see a view through our bedroom out into the chilly landscape of the Minnesotan forest. In the foreground is a typical American patchwork quilt. Below are two photographs of a midwinter Minnesotan scene taken after a heavy snowfall. |

| The Giant's Ridge ski resort held very special memories for us because it was here that we first leart to ski in the late 1960's.The photogrph below shows us just about to begin our ski instruction all those years ago and contrasts with the adjacent contemporary ski ticket. | |

From Minnesota to the Rockies is just under a one thousand mile drive, mostly along Interstate 94 across a wild, snowy and largely desolate landscape. This was completed in two days. Here you can see a view from the back of the car with the scenery along the route being little other than a long snow-lined road. |

On arrival in the West we skied the resorts of Showdown, Bridger Bowl and Big Sky as well as making a skidoo trip into Yellowstone to see Old Faithful, which was quite a sight in mid-winter. Here, Geoff, all kitted out and ready to go, is waiting in the Comfort Hotel at Bozeman, Montana. Below are various images depicting the slopes at Big Sky. |
