Above are two views of the main anchorage at Lundy Island which lies at a latitude of 51 degrees, 10 minutes, north and longitude of 4 degrees, 40 minutes west and is some twenty two miles from Ilfracombe, the nearest large harbour. The anchorage provides good holding and is protected from the prevailing westerly winds by the high, 400 foot, plateau of Lundy itself and Rat, and Mouse, island which together complete a gentle curve. Only three miles long and some half a mile wide it is bordered by spectacular cliffs. It was purchased in 1969 for the National Trust and now supports only a small permanent community although in the summer months this is swollen by day trippers arriving on the MS Oldenburg to be seen here in the anchorage. Waters around the island now form a Marine Nature Reserve.
Immediately above the anchorage stands one of the two lighthouses. A sketch showing the approach to Lundy Isand from the sea may be seen here.
