North Street

North Street

There are many crumbling buildings in North Street and some date back to Regency times yet the ground floors have been torn out and fitted with garish shop fronts while the upper floors retain some of the period dignity but have been allowed to deteriorate badly which is not always apparent to passers-by because they rarely raise their eyes above what is on display in the shop windows.

This is the main street through Bourne and is actually part of the A15 trunk road, carrying through traffic between Peterborough and Lincoln, and so the road is always busy. A bypass is the obvious solution and although this was first mooted in 1926, it is no nearer reality today.

The street contains a mix of old and new properties, most notably the Burghley Arcade, while the more ancient properties have all been refurbished as retail units and so their period charm has been largely lost, even though many are still Grade II listed buildings although few have been properly maintained.

An illustrated history of North Street's buildings can be found in A Portrait of Bourne
