The Methodist Chapel

The Methodist Chapel in Abbey Road

Methodists started meeting at a cottage in Bourne in the early 19th century until the present site was acquired in 1812 and the first chapel was built.

The congregation in the early days was sustained by a small group of families and after the purchase of an adjoining piece of land, the present chapel in Abbey Road with its façade of huge Doric pilasters was built at a cost of £1,200 and opened in 1841.

In recent years, surveyors found the structure unsafe but by then it had become a Grade II listed building and the Department of the Environment refused permission for it to be demolished in order that a new chapel could be built on the site and so the property has been refurbished at a cost of £300,000 and remains in use.

A history of Methodist in Bourne over the past 200 years can be found
