| The year's first sign of life in our gardens and parks is the snowdrop and a large number can always be seen around town, although this week they have been accompanied by snowfalls that have provided a reminder that winter is still with us. Most are in bloom by February 2nd which is Candlemas Day from which is derived their less | well known name of Candlemas Bells. The 19th century English romantic poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote: "If winter comes, can spring be far behind?" and so despite the snow and freezing temperatures we anticipate brighter days ahead and these delicate white blooms are a harbinger of the new season. |
