Black swan at St Peter's Pool, Bourne
PHOTOGRAPHED BY REX NEEDLE IN FEBRUARY 2003

The Wellhead Gardens are a favourite walk on bright afternoons in winter and we have the added interest of seeing mallard, moorhen and particularly black swans enjoying the sunshine at St Peter's Pool. These stately birds are indigenous to Australia and Tasmania and have made their home here since the summer of 1999, producing several cygnets each year and delighting visitors who bring them tasty morsels. The town centre is only a few steps away and yet this spot has been a haven of peace and tranquillity for centuries and long may it remain so. More about black swans.

PEEPS INTO THE PAST

The street scene in Eastgate has changed dramatically over the past century, mainly because the Bourne Eau which flows through the district has been piped, the road widened and the wooden bridges giving access to houses removed.
