A SUCCESS STORY FOR THIS WEB SITE

THE FAMILY HISTORY section of the Bourne web site has now reached a membership of more than 200. They comprise not only of people from Bourne and other parts of Britain, but also from around the world, particularly those places we used to call the colonies, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, where many people from this town emigrated in centuries past to start a new life and whose descendants are now anxious to trace their heritage.

We began this feature six years ago and the impressive number of people now participating makes the Bourne web site the largest single group investigating their ancestors in the town and most probably in the county of Lincolnshire. The names from their family trees are listed below, many of which are familiar because they frequently occur in old records, registers and newspaper reports, and the remarkable thing is that because of the Internet, those involved in their research can contact each other immediately because each name has an email link which enables them, or anyone else who sees a familiar name, swap information to find out how they are related.

An example of what can be achieved in tracing the people from Bourne in past times is the work of Tim Crampton, one of our members, who lives at Lake Tyers Beach, Victoria, Australia. He has already amassed an impressive archive about his family dating back to his great-great-grandfather, William Crampton, who was born at Spalding in 1798 and was married at the Wesleyan Chapel in Bourne, now the Methodist Chapel in Abbey Road, on 12th May 1822 to 19-year-old Sarah Allen. Four of their children, two daughters and two sons, sailed for Australia to begin a new life and as a result, more than 1,000 members of the Crampton family are scattered throughout the continent today with branches in West Australia, Victoria and Queensland.

There are many other examples of involvement with Bourne that have produced remarkable information about our past that is essential reading for anyone who is really interested in our town and its history. Who, for instance, knows that Raymond Mays' mother was the daughter of the landlord of the Nag's Head? Or that Thomas Glendening, a talented amateur artist, was station master in Bourne when the Red Hall was the railway booking office in the late 19th century? This information comes to us through our Family History section and there are also many exciting tales to be told about those who went abroad to start a new life and Bourne now has the opportunity to add this information to its archives. One man from the town, for instance, Joseph Tye Flatters, a former trumpeter with Bourne Town Band, became a sheriff in the wild west and was shot by a thief he was trying to arrest while another, John Layton, the son of the landlord of the Bull Hotel, now the Burghley Arms, joined the Californian gold rush and made his fortune.

The names of those currently being researched by our members are listed below, reflecting the families of yesteryear whose lives are part of our history and should not be forgotten.
