Why "honest"?
There's no implication intended here that others preach dishonest sermons. But first-hand experience
indicates how difficult it can be for
preachers to say what they really think.
These alternative sermons are
offered only as starting points to those who must preach and yet want to
make sense of the world and their lives as they are today. It is assumed
that those who use the sermons will work out their own illustrations and so on,
according to their own situations.
The sermons usually focus on readings
either from the Common Worship Lectionary authorised for use in the
Church of England, or from the Book of Common Prayer
of the Church of England.
Anthony
Freeman was
removed from his parish
ministry in July 1994 for views expressed in his book "God In
Us". This series of sermons offers insight into his thought.
