The Good News According to Matthew:
Chapter Twenty Five

25.14-28
Jesus said: "The way God does things is rather like a man who went abroad. He summoned his servants and entrusted his money to them. To one he gave five silver coins; to one he gave two; and to another he gave one - to each according to his ability. Then the man went off.

"The man who had received five coins went out immediately, put the money to work and made another five coins. The man who had been given two coins also doubled his money. But the man who had received one coin went out and dug a hole in which he hid his master's money.

"After a long absence, the servants' master came back and settled accounts with them.

"The man who had received five coins came and produced another five and said, 'Sir, you gave me five coins. Look! I have made another five for you.'

"His master replied, 'You're a good and reliable servant. You've proved trustworthy with a small sum. Now I'll put you in charge of a large amount.'

"Then the man who had been given two coins came to report. 'Sir,' he said, 'You gave me two coins. Look! I have earned you another two.'

"His master answered, 'You've shown you can be trusted with a small sum. So now I can put you in charge of large amounts.'

"Then the servant who had received one coin came and reported, 'Sir, I know you're a tough businessman. You take profits without investing and make money without taking chances. So I went out and buried the money, because I was scared. Look! Here it is.'

"But his master responded, 'You inept and lazy fellow. So! I take profits where I don't invest and make money where I take no risks, do I? In that case, you should have put my money into the bank so that I got some interest when I came back. Now, take the money away from him and give it to the one who has ten coins.'"
