The Good News According to Matthew:
Chapter Twenty Three
23.5-7, 11-12, 25-26
Jesus said: "All the deeds they [the Scholars and Pharisees] do,
they do to impress other people. They wear widened phylacteries and large
tassels. They love the most important places at banquets, reserved pews at
church, and respectful greetings in the shops. And they like to be called
'Sir' by everyone.
"But among you the greatest should serve, for those
who struggle for greatness will be brought down and those who take a back
seat will be great.
"You clean the outside of cups and plates, but inside they are
filled by greed and corruption. First clean the inside of the cup."
