| The Good News According to Matthew:
Chapter Twenty Two
22.2-13
Jesus said: "The way God does things is something like this. There
was once a certain high-up who gave a wedding reception for his son. He
sent his servants to call those who had been invited, but they didn't feel
like coming.
"So he sent other servants and gave them instructions:
'Tell those who have been invited that the food is ready, and that
the oxen and fattened calves have been slaughtered. They must come to the
wedding!'
"But they took no notice. One went off to his farm,
another to his business, while others grabbed his servants, attacked them
and killed them.
"The high-up was enraged. He sent in armed men to do away
with the killers and burn down their city. He told his servants, 'Even though the reception is ready, the people I invited have proved
unworthy. So go into the streets and invite anyone you can find into the
reception.'
"The servants went out into the streets and rounded up
anyone they could find, good and bad alike, so that the wedding venue was
filled with guests."
22.19-21
They handed Jesus a coin used for paying taxes. He said to them,
"Whose image and name is on it?" They replied, "The
Emperor's."
So he said to them, "Give back to the Emperor what
belongs to him, and give to God what belongs to God."
22.23-32
Some Sadducees - a group who claim there's no such thing as the
resurrection - came to him and questioned him. "Teacher," they
said, "Moses says that if a man dies childless his brother is obliged
to marry his widow and produce children on his brother's behalf. We once
knew seven brothers. The first married and then died. Because he had no
offspring he left his widow to his brother. The same happened to the
second brother, and to the third and so on up to the seventh brother. Last
of all the wife died. Now then, in the resurrection, to which of the seven
will she be wife? (Remember, they had all married her.)"
Responding to them, Jesus said, "You've missed the
point yet again - all because you misjudge the holy writings and God's
power. For at the resurrection people aren't married but are rather like
God's messengers, the angels. With respect to the resurrection, haven't
you read what God says to you? 'I am the God of Abraham and of Isaac and
of Jacob.' So he's not God of the dead but of the living."
22.37-40
Jesus said: "You've got to love the
Lord your God with your whole being - with your whole heart and mind. And the second most important rule is, 'You must love
your fellow human beings as much as you love yourself.' Everything in the
Law and the Prophets depends on these two rules."
