The Good News According to Matthew: Chapter Twenty

20.1-15
Jesus said: "The way God does things is something like a businessman who went out early one morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay some workers a silver coin for the day and sent them into his vineyard.

"Around nine o'clock he went out and saw some other men hanging around in the marketplace. He said to them, 'You go into the vineyard also, and I'll pay you a fair wage.' So they went.

"He did the same thing at twelve o'clock and again at three o'clock.

"Coming up to five o'clock, the businessman went out and found some others standing around there. He said to them, 'Why do you stand around here doing nothing the whole day?'

"They answered, 'Because nobody has hired us.'

"So he told them, 'You go into the vineyard also.'

"When evening came, the businessman told his foreman, 'Call the workers and pay them their wages. Start with those who were hired last and end with those who were hired first.'

"Those hired around five o'clock came up and were paid a silver coin each. When those who had been hired first came up they thought they would get more. But they were also each given a silver coin. They took it and started grumbling about the businessman. 'Those who were hired last worked only an hour,' they said. 'You paid us the same as you paid them even though we worked through the heat of the day.'

"The businessman answered one of them, 'Pay attention, friend. I have done you no wrong! Didn't you agree with me for a silver coin? Take your pay and get along! It's my wish to treat the man who was hired last the same as you. Is there any rule preventing me doing what I like with my money? Or are you so full of envy because I'm being generous?'"

20.16
Jesus said, "The last will be first, and the first last."

20.25-27
Jesus said: "You're well aware how national leaders lord it over their subjects and how the very powerful tyrannize them. It shouldn't be like that amongst you. If anyone wants to be great, let him become everyone's servant. And if anyone wants to be top dog, let him be everyone's slave."

20.29-34
One day they were leaving Jericho and a large crowd was with them. Two blind men happened to be sitting at the roadside. When they found out that Jesus was passing by, they shouted out, "Sir, son of David, take pity on us."

Everyone yelled at them to shut up, but they shouted out even louder, "Sir, son of David, have mercy on us!"

Jesus paused and called out to them, "What do you want me to do for you?"

They replied, "Sir, open our eyes!"

Jesus took pity on them and touched their eyes. They got their sight back instantly and followed him.
