The Good News According to Matthew: Chapter Thirteen

13.1-9
One day Jesus went out to the lakeside. And large crowds clustered around him. So he had to get into a boat and sit down while the whole crowd stood on the shore. He told them all sorts of things using parables:

"A sower once went out to sow some seed. As he sowed, some of the seed fell along the path and the birds came and ate it up.

"Some of the seed fell on rocky ground where there wasn't much soil. It germinated quickly because the soil was so shallow. When the sun came up the plants were scorched because the roots weren't deep enough.

"And some seed fell among thorns. The thorns sprouted and choked them.

"But other seed feel on fertile ground and began to produce a good crop. One part produced a yield of one hundred, another a yield of sixty and another a yield of thirty.

"Those with good hearing should listen!"

13.31-32
Jesus told them another parable: "The heavenly way of doing things resembles a mustard seed which a man once took and planted in his field. It's the smallest of all seeds - yet when it matures it's the largest of all garden plants. It becomes a  tree so that birds come and nest in its branches."

And again: "God's way of acting can be compared with yeast which a woman took and mixed with forty litres of flour until the entire batch rose."

13.34, 44-45
Jesus told them all sorts of things using parables, saying, "Those with good hearing had better listen!"

Jesus once said, "God's way of doing things is something like treasure which has been hidden in a field and then found by someone. That person covers it up again and with great delight goes and sells every last possession in order to buy the field."

And again: "God's way is rather like a trader looking for beautiful pearls. When he comes across a priceless pearl, he sells everything he has and buys it."

13.54-57
Jesus once arrived in his home town. He taught people in the synagogue. They were really surprised and said, "Where does he get this wisdom and power from? Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother named Mary? And aren't his brothers named James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? And aren't his sisters all neighbours of ours? Where did he get all this from?" They didn't approve of him.

Jesus said, "A prophet is usually respected - except in his home town and in his own home."
