The Good News According to Matthew:
Chapter Twelve
12.1-2, 8
On one occasion Jesus was walking through some fields of grain on the
Sabbath day. His followers were hungry, so they began to strip off the
heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this they said to him,
"Look here, your followers are doing something forbidden on the
Sabbath."
Jesus said: "Keep in mind that mankind is master of the Sabbath."
12.22-28
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus was exorcising people they said:
"This man is able to drive out demons only because he has the backing of
Beelzebul, the chief demon." Jesus
said to them, "Every nation which is at odds with itself will
self-destruct, and every city or household which is split apart will not
survive. So if Satan drives out Satan, he splits himself apart. In that
case, how long can his control last? If I cast out demons through
Beelzebul, by whose authority do your people cast them out? This shows
that you are wrong. For if it's through God's Spirit that I
cast out demons, then the way God does things is already with us." 12.29
Jesus said, "The
only way anyone can break into a powerful man's house and take his
possessions is to tie him up first. Only then can his house be looted." 12.33, 35
Jesus said: "If you grow a healthy tree its fruit will be good.
But if the tree you grow is poor, it's fruit is also poor. A good person
brings out good from his treasure of good. A bad person gets evil from his
store of evil." 12.46-50
Once when Jesus was busy talking to people, his mother and brothers
arrived, wanting to speak to him. Someone with him said, "Hey,
your mother and brothers want a word with you." In response to the
person Jesus said, "Who is my mother, and who are my
brothers?" He indicated his followers and said, "See, these
are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of God in heaven is
my brother and sister and mother." Chapter
