The Good News According to Mark:
Chapter Six

6.2-4,6
One Sabbath Jesus started teaching in the synagogue.

The people who heard him expressed astonishment, saying, "Where's he getting all this from?" and "What's the source of this wisdom? Who gave him the ability to do great things? Isn't he the carpenter, the son of Mary? And aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Don't his sisters live among us?" They didn't approve of him.

Jesus used to say to people, "A prophet is usually respected - except on his home ground and by his own family and household."

Jesus went to the villages round about, teaching people.

6.7-13
Jesus summoned [the Twelve*]. He began sending them out in pairs and gave them power over spirits that caused sickness. He instructed them to take nothing on the road except a staff - no bread, no bags, and no money. They should wear sandals and take no more than one shirt.

6.14-18, 27
Jesus' reputation was growing and he came to the notice of King Herod. Some time before, Herod had sent out and had John the Baptiser arrested and chained up in a dungeon. This was because John had criticised him for marrying Herodias, saying, "It's not right for you to have her." The Tetrarch sent for the executioner who then went off and beheaded John in the prison.
