The Good News According to Mark:
Chapter Two

2. 1-5, 12
People heard that Jesus was in a certain house and came crowding around. There was such a crush that even the doorway was blocked. Four people came along carrying a paralysed man. When they couldn't get close because of the crowd, they removed the roofing above Jesus and lowered the man down on his mat. Jesus perceived their trust and spoke to the paralysed man.
Then everyone there saw the man get up and walk out carrying his mat.

The onlookers were greatly excited. Praising God, they exclaimed, "We've never seen anything like this before!"

2.13-14; 15-16
Another time, Jesus went to the seaside and began teaching a large
crowd which was following him.

On one such occasion he spotted a tax collector sitting at his toll station. The tax collector became a follower.

One day Jesus was reclining at table with a group of tax collectors and other sinners, for many such people were following him. When the students of the Pharisees saw Jesus eating with sinners and tax collectors, they asked, "Why is he eating with such people?" Jesus' response was, "Those who are well don't need a doctor. It's those who are ill who need one."

In contrast to the followers of Jesus, the Pharisees and John's followers used to fast. Some people therefore asked Jesus, "Why do the followers of the Pharisees and of John fast, while yours don't?" He answered, "While a bridegroom is still with his friends, they don't fast, do they? Nor can anyone expect them to!"

He also said, "Nobody patches up an old coat with a piece of new cloth. The new cloth will shrink, pull away from the old, and make an even worse tear."

And again: "Nobody pours young wine into old wineskins because the new wine will split the skins. Then both the wine and the skins will be ruined. Instead, they use fresh skins for new wine."

2.23-24, 27
One Sabbath day Jesus happened to be walking through some fields of grain. His followers stripped off the heads of the grain as they went along. The Pharisees tackled him about this sort of behaviour. "Why do they do what's not allowed on the Sabbath?"

Jesus' response was:

The Sabbath was made for mankind,
Not mankind for the Sabbath.
So mankind rules even the Sabbath.
