The Good News According to Luke
Chapter Nine

9.1-3
Jesus summoned [the Twelve*] and gave them power and authority over all demons and to heal infirmities. He then sent them out to tell people how God does things and to cure the sick. He advised them, "Take nothing for the road - not staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money, not even an extra shirt."

9.7, 9
Herod Antipas had heard a lot about Jesus. He said, "I beheaded John, but who is this man?"

9.24-25, 27
Jesus said to people, "Keep in mind that those who try to preserve their life are likely to lose it. But those who give up their life for me will keep it. For how can it help a person to gain the whole world and yet forfeit his very being to his own great loss?"

9.38
A man once shouted from a crowd, "Teacher, please take a look at my son. He's my only child. A spirit takes hold of him and all of a sudden he screams. It gives him convulsions and he foams at the mouth. The spirit leaves him only after abusing him."

Jesus admonished the spirit and the boy was healed.

9.50
Jesus said, "Whoever is not against you is for you."

9.58-60
Jesus said, "Jackals have dens, and the birds in the air have their nests. But I have nowhere to rest my head."

He said, "Follow me."

He also said, "Let the dead bury their own, but you go out and tell everyone how God works."

We can't be sure either about the number of the inner circle of Jesus'
      followers, or their names.
