The Good News According to Luke
Chapter Seven
7.24-25
Jesus talked to the crowds about John. He asked, "What did you go out into
the barren lands to see? An opportunistic politician [1]? What then did you go
out to see? A man dressed in designer clothes? Look here! People who dress
like that live in palatial mansions. So what did you go out to see? A
prophet? Spot on, I say - and very much more than a prophet!" 7.33-34
Jesus said, "Keep in mind that when John came along he neither fasted nor
drank wine - and yet you said he was possessed by a demon. Then I appeared
on the scene eating and drinking and you said, 'Look at this fellow! He's
a glutton and drunkard who makes friends with tax collectors and other
untouchables.'" 7.36-38
A Pharisee invited Jesus to a meal. So Jesus went along to his house
and sat down at table. A woman of the town who had a bad reputation
pitched up with an alabaster jar of perfume. She stood behind him and her
tears wet his feet. She wiped them dry with her hair. Then she kissed his
feet and poured the perfume on them.

[1] This sentence "A reed bending
in the wind" has to be interpreted to make sense to us today. The
term "a bent reed" seems to have been used sarcastically of
Herod Antipas by many Hebrew people of the time. As John Henson writes in Good
As New: A Radical Retelling of the Scriptures, a reed "... was
the symbol on his [Herod's] coins. The pattern here suggests a humorous
repartee between Jesus and the crowd. To the first two questions the crowd
would have laughingly shouted out 'No!' and to the third 'Yes!'"
