The Good News According to Luke
Chapter Six
6.1-2, 5
On one occasion Jesus was walking through some fields of grain on a
Sabbath day. His followers were stripping the heads of grain, rubbing them
between their hands, and eating them. But some Pharisees said, "Why are
you doing what's not allowed on the Sabbath?"
Jesus responded to them, "Mankind is master of the
Sabbath."
6.20-21
Jesus often said: "Good for the poor! Theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Good for those who starve now! They'll have a feast. Good for those who
weep now! They will laugh."
6.27-30
Jesus said, "Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. Bless those
who insult you. When someone hits you on the cheek, offer the other one as
well. When someone takes your jacket, don't stop that person from
taking your shirt also. Give to everyone who asks you for a favour. Deal
with others the same way you want them to treat you."
6.32
Jesus said, "For what's special about loving those who love you? What's good
about that? After all, even the lowest of the low love those who love
them. If you are good towards those who treat you well, what's so
commendable about that? And if you lend only to those from whom you hope
to gain something, what's good about that? Even dropouts lend to each
other for their mutual benefit."
6.35, 37
Jesus said, "Love your enemies. Be kind to others in the same way
that the Father is kind to you. Forgive others and you'll be forgiven."
6.39
Jesus said, "Can a blind person lead another blind person? Won't
they both just fall into a ditch?"
6.41-42
Jesus said, "Why do you point out the speck in your friend's eye, but fail to
notice the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your friend, 'Friend,
let me take the speck out of your eye', when you won't heed the plank in
your own eye? You fraud! Take the plank out of your own eye first. Then
you'll see well enough to get the speck out of your friend's eye."
6.43
Jesus said, "A healthy tree doesn't produce bad fruit. Nor does a
sick tree yield good fruit. You can tell the state of a tree by its
fruit. You don't pick figs from thorn trees, and you don't pick grapes
from thorn bushes."
