The Good News According to Luke
Chapter Five
5.12-13
A man covered with a terrible skin disease once knelt with his face to
the ground when he saw Jesus. He pleaded with him, "Sir, you can make
me clean if you want to." Jesus reached out and touched him, saying,
"I so will. Be clean!" And the skin disease disappeared at once. 5.18-19; 25-26
One day, along came some men. They were carrying a paralysed man on a
stretcher. They tried to bring him in and put him down in front of Jesus.
But because of the crowd there was no way in. So they went up onto the
roof and lowered him down through the tiles into the middle of the crowd
and in front of Jesus. Jesus spoke
to him and he got up immediately, picked up the stretcher on which he had
been lying and went home giving glory to God. Everyone
was astounded. They also began to praise God. But they were also filled
with holy fear and exclaimed, "We've seen something incredible
today!" 5.27-32
After this Jesus went out and spotted a taxman sitting at his toll
station. This man got up, left everything he had, and followed him. The
taxman threw a big dinner for Jesus. A lot of taxmen and others were there
to dine with him. The Pharisees and men of the Law complained to Jesus'
followers, asking, "Why does your crowd eat and drink with taxmen and
sinful people?" Jesus responded to them, "Healthy people don't
need a doctor, only those who are sick. I haven't come to call innocent
people to a new way of life, but those who are wrongdoers." 5.34
Jesus once said, "You can't demand that a groom's friends fast
while he's still with them, can you?" 5.36
Jesus said, "Nobody ever patches an old garment with a piece from
a new one. For the new garment will be spoiled, and the patch from it
won't fit the old one." 5.37
Jesus once said, "Nobody ever puts new wine into old wineskins.
If they do, the new wine will burst the old skins and be spilled, and the
old skins will be destroyed. Chapter
