The Good News According to Luke
Chapter Twenty

20.9-15
Jesus told the people this parable: "A certain man planted a vineyard. He rented it out to some tenant farmers and went overseas for a long time.

"After a while he sent an employee to collect the proceeds of the harvest. But the farmers beat him up and sent him away empty-handed. Once again he sent another employee. But they beat him up also, humiliated him, and sent him away with nothing. He sent a third employee. But they injured him and threw him out.

"Then the owner of the vineyard said to himself, 'What shall I do now? I'll send my dear son. Perhaps they'll respect him when they see him.'

"But when the farmers saw who it was, they said to each other, 'This is his heir. Come! Let's kill him so that we can inherit the property.'

"So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him."

20.25
Jesus said, "Pay to the Emperor what belongs to him, and to God what belongs to God."

20.27-35, 38
Some Sadducees, who maintain that there's no such thing as resurrection, came to Jesus and said, "Moses wrote this law for us all:

'If a man dies and has a wife but no children, then his brother is obliged to marry the widow and produce offspring for his brother.'

"There were once seven brothers. The eldest got married but had no children. Then the second brother married the woman but died childless. The third brother did likewise and so on until they had all died without having any children. Finally, the woman herself died.

"Now then! Whose wife will she be in the afterlife? (Remember, all seven married her.)'

Jesus responded to them like this: "The people of these times marry and are given away in marriage. God isn't the God of the dead but of the living."

20.45-47
In earshot of all the people, Jesus said to his followers, "Watch out for the teachers of the Law! They like walking around in their fancy clothes. They love to be greeted respectfully in the shopping malls. They desire to get the best seats in church and to be seated at the top table at banquets. Yet they prey on widows and repossess their homes - and then make a show of saying long prayers!"
