The Good News According to Luke
Chapter Eighteen

18.2
Jesus said, "There was once a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor had much respect for public opinion.

"There was a widow in the same town who kept coming to him and saying, 'Give me a ruling against my opponent.'

"He refused for a while, but in the end he said to himself, 'I'm not afraid of God and I care nothing for public opinion. But this widow keeps on bothering me - I'll give her a favourable ruling so that she won't keep on coming back and getting on my nerves.'"

18.10-13
Jesus told this parable. "There were once two men who went to church to pray. One was a Pharisee and one was a tax collector.

"The Pharisee stood and prayed silently like this: 'O God, I thank you that I'm not a swindler, or unjust, or an adulterer like some people - and especially that I'm not like that tax collector. I fast twice a week and give ten percent of my income to charity.'

"But the tax collector stood some way off and wouldn't even lift his eyes towards heaven. Instead, he beat his breast and said, 'O God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'

18.14
Jesus said, "Those who struggle for greatness will be brought down and those who take a back seat will be rise to the top."

18.16
People used to bring their children to Jesus for a blessing. The companions tried to stop them, but Jesus called for the children and said, "Let children come to me - don't prevent them. For God's empire consists of people like this."

18.18-25
One of the rich asked Jesus, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

Jesus said to him, "You know the commandments. You shouldn't commit adultery, you shouldn't murder or steal, and you shouldn't perjure yourself. And you must honour your parents."

He answered, "I've kept them all since childhood."

When Jesus heard him, he said to him, "One thing is still missing from your life. Sell everything you own and give it to the poor. Then come and follow me."

But when he heard this, he felt sad because he was extremely wealthy.

When Jesus saw how sad he was, he said, "It's incredibly hard for a rich person to enter the heavenly kingdom. It's easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to do things God's way."

18.36-43
One day, when Jesus was entering Jericho, a blind man was begging at the side of the road. When he heard the crowd going past, he asked what was going on.

They told him, "Jesus from Nazareth is passing by."

So he called out and said, "Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me."

Those who went ahead told him loudly to keep quiet. But he called even louder, "You son of David, have mercy on me!"

So Jesus paused and told them to guide the blind man over to him, and when he was near enough asked him what he wanted.

The blind man said, "Master, I want to see again!"

Jesus spoke to him and he immediately regained his sight.
