The Good News According to Luke
Chapter Fourteen

14.5
Jesus said, "Which of you if your child or your ox fell into a cistern, wouldn't dash to haul them out even though it was a Sabbath day?"

14.11
Jesus said, "Those who struggle for greatness will be brought down and those who take a back seat will rise to the top."

14.16-23
Jesus said, "A certain man put on a big dinner and invited lots of guests. At dinnertime he sent his servant to tell the guests, 'You can come now; everything is ready.'

"But one after the other they made their excuses. The first said to him, 'I've just bought a farm and I really must go and take a look at it. Please excuse me.' Another said, 'I've bought five pairs of oxen and I'm going to test them out. I must ask you to excuse me.' And another said, 'I've just got married, so it's not in my power to come.'

"So the servant came back and told his boss about all this. The master of the house got angry and told his servant, 'Go out into the malls and streets of the town and ask in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.'

"The servant reported, 'Sir, your instructions have been carried out - but there are still places.'

"The master told the servant, 'Go out into the country roads and lanes and make people come in so that my house will be full.'"

14.26
Jesus said, "If anyone comes to me who doesn't love his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters - and even his own life - less than me can't be a follower of mine."

14.34-35
Jesus said, "Salt is good, but if it loses its taste, how can it be renewed? It's useless either for the soil or for the slurry. It's just thrown away."
