The Good News According to Luke
Chapter Twelve
12.2
Jesus said, "There's nothing which has been concealed which won't
be uncovered; and nothing which is secret that won't be known."
12.6-7
Jesus said, "Aren't five sparrows sold for only two-pence? And yet not one of
them is forgotten by God! Even the hairs of your head have all been
tallied. So don't be over-anxious. You're worth more than many sparrows."
12.13-14
Someone in a crowd once said to Jesus, "Tell my brother to divide
the inheritance with me." Jesus responded, "Who appointed me to
be a judge or arbitrator over you?"
12.16-20
Jesus said, "The land of a certain rich farmer once yielded a bumper crop. He
considered the options, asking himself, 'What do I do now? I have nowhere
to store my crops.'
"So he said, 'What I'll do is knock down my barns
and build new ones so that I can store all my crops and possessions. Then
I'll be able to tell myself that I've put plenty away for the future and
that I can take it easy. I can eat and drink and live it up.'"
"But God said to him, 'You idiot! Tonight's
the night you'll be giving up the ghost! Then who will get all this stuff
you've hoarded?'"
12.22-28
Jesus said, "I say to you with good reason, don't get over-anxious about life
and what you'll have to eat; nor about your body and what you've got to
wear. There's more to life than food, and more to health than clothing.
Think of the crows. They don't plant and harvest and they don't have
storerooms and barns. And yet God feeds them! You're worth much more than
birds.
"Can any of you add a single hour to your life by
being over-anxious? Think about lilies growing. They don't work for a
living and they don't spin cloth. But I say to you that Solomon at the
height of his glory wasn't dressed like one of these! If God clothes the
grass in the fields, which is here today and tomorrow is put in the oven,
isn't it even more certain that God will care for you? How little you
trust!"
12.33-34
Jesus said, "Sell your possessions and give to charity. Then you'll
have made for
yourselves wallets that don't wear out, and heavenly riches which thieves
can't get at and the moth can't destroy. What you treasure is the measure
of who you really are."
12.35-38
Jesus said, "Keep your belts fastened and your lights on. Copy the those who
wait up for their employer to get back from a wedding and are ready for
him the moment he gets home and knocks. The servants who are alert when
their employer arrives will feel good. I'm telling you, he'll get ready,
sit them down at table and wait on them! If they are alert even though he
comes home at midnight or at three in the morning they'll feel good."
12.39
Jesus said, "Be sure of this: if a home-owner were to know what
time burglars were coming, he'd take steps to stop them breaking in."
12.51-53
Jesus said, "Do you think that I came along to bring peace to the
world? I'm telling you, just the opposite - conflict! This means that from
now on in any given house there could be five people in conflict, three
against two and two against three. A father could be fighting with his
son, a mother with her daughter and a daughter with her mother.
12.58-59
Jesus said, "When you find yourself with an adversary about to
come before a magistrate, try everything you can to settle with him before
you get there. Otherwise when you appear before the judge, you might be
handed over to the prison authorities, who will put you in jail. I'm
telling you, you're likely never to get out until you've paid the last
cent!"
