The Good News According to John:
Chapter Eight

8.1-11
Jesus walked up to the Mount of Olives. At sunrise he again went to the Temple. People gathered around him and he sat down and began to teach them.

The scholars and Pharisees hauled before him a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They made her stand in front of everybody.

They said to him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught committing adultery. Now the Law of Moses commands that a woman like this should be stoned. What do you say?"

At this Jesus squatted down and began writing in the dust. When they badgered him for an answer, he stood up and replied, "Whichever of you is sinless should throw the first stone." Then he again squatted and resumed writing in the dust.

When they heard this they all left one by one, the elders first. Eventually only Jesus and the woman, standing where she was, were left.

Jesus rose and said to her, "Woman, where are your accusers? Has anyone condemned you?"

She replied, "Nobody, sir."
