Reminiscence Work, itself an unwieldy and not very comprehensive description of a range of possibilities, does not replace or contradict elements of good practice inherent to care disciplines, but rather brings them together in a context that is essentially 'social' or 'personal' rather than 'clinical'. Projects are not about the past, but about the present - the direct experience of old age now interacting positively and individualistically with the caring process.

Reminiscence Work is a two way process requiring the help and co-operation of participants and we can only secure that help if we have a good working relationship and awareness of individuals. That relationship must be established over time and with thoughtful effort.

It is, in some people's eyes, difficult to justify putting resources into aspects of care that are often not considered essential because we are talking of intangible concepts such as 'well being', and 'quality of experience'. If we are not to cynically warehouse those who are in need of support in old age then it must be important that attention is given not only to alleviating physical pain and discomfort but also to alleviating loneliness and isolation, by creating situations that allow people to experience a sense of belonging and a sense of being valued for themselves.

Using past experience as a basis for creative and reflective engagement  creates a meaningful context for interaction and is a starting point for mutual communication. The 'process' of reminiscing is not just the act of remembering, but also the act of communicating and sharing in a context of sensitive attention by others. It is the quality of the interaction that matters most and we should concentrate on the person not on the past. For the individuals within a group to experience this confirmation and benefit from it, they must know that they are part of what is going on and that their contribution is welcome and seen as important.

The quality of care of lies in the process of care. Reminiscence Work, especially if integrated with the arts, represents a superb framework for meaningful activity in the context of care.
