The British Horse Society is promoting a scheme for a long distance riding route to be known as ‘The North London Bridleroute’, or ‘H251’ for short. The H251 will form part of the National Bridleroute Network, including the London Orbital Bridleroute (H25) in Hertfordshire and Essex, and the Peterborough to Peddars Way route (H47) in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. As parts of the H251 open, there will be more scope for the development of circular horse and cycle rides leading from the main route. The North London Bridleroute project was adopted by the British Horse Society on1 May 00 .

Hertfordshire County Council stated 'The establishment of strategic footpaths, bridleways and leisure cycling routes and links to the wider network of movement are supported ...' as Policy 49 in the adopted (1998) Structure Plan.
Route
The route planning process started in 2000. The route will start from some point on the London Orbital Bridleroute (H25) and head generally southwards and eastwards out of Hertfordshire and into Greater London.
This regional route provides a link from the Capital to the strategic routes on the National Bridleroute Network.
Unfortunately, some of the route will initially use minor roads, and the Society with its Partners in the H251 scheme will seek off-road alternatives for the on-road stretches, by negotiation with land owners and occupiers. The Society's local access and bridleways officers will negotiate with the appropriate local authorities, land owners and user groups to define the route more precisely.
Notable Events
29 Jun 07: Hertfordshire County Council made an Order recording a bridge over the A1(M) on the definitive map and statement as a restricted byway. This bridge forms the junction of the H251 and H25 in Hertfordshire and marks the westernmost point of the H251. Read more on the Patchetts Green Bridleways Trust web site. (File reference EC317)
28 Feb 03: Application made to record Wash Lane (part of the H251) as byway. It is presently closed to motor vehicular traffic by Traffic Regulation Order. (File ref. EC316)
