Members of the House of Commons can promote "Early Day Motions" (EDMs). While these are not often debated, they provide a means for other MPs to express their views on a subject, and so are a tool in influencing Governmental policy. In Parliamentary session 2007/8, Lindsay Hoyle MP sponsored the following EDM.

EDM 402 of Session 2007/8

"That this House recognises the importance of bridleways for horse-riders to exercise in safety and enjoy the countryside; notes that many bridleways are in poor condition or are abused by people using motorised vehicles; and calls on the Government actively to promote the use of bridleways, ensuring that those who use bridleways inappropriately are fined, to look to extend the number of bridleways across the country and to ensure that existing bridleways are kept open and are well-maintained for horse-riders."

  • If you agree with the aims of this EDM, why not ask your MP to support it? You can write to your MP at: House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA.
  • You can find out who your MP is here.
  • We also support EDM 14. Why not ask about both at the same time?

See how your MP voted in a similarly worded EDM 2332 in 2005/6 which had the support of 211 MPs, or EDM 1004 in 2006/7 which had the support of 59 MPs.

'Support' means the MP has written to say he supports the aims but doesn't sign EDMs either as a matter of policy or because he is part of the Government.
