Members of the House of Commons can promote "Early Day Motions" (EDMs).
While these are not often debated, they provide a means for other MPs to express their views on a subject, and so are a tool in influencing Governmental policy. In Parliamentary session 2006/7, Peter Ainsworth MP sponsored the following EDM.
EDM 55 of Session 2006/7 "That this House recognises the value of the horse industry to the economy; further recognises the importance of bridleways; further recognises that they enable both horse riders and walkers to exercise and enjoy the countryside without having to navigate increasingly busy roads; notes that bridleways are not always well maintained or easy to follow; and calls on the Government to support bridleways and recognise their benefits to health and the economy." |
As this session of Parliament has now ended, it is now too late to affect these results, but it's never too late to write to your MP to seek to change an opinion!
