Special Achievement Award: Katy Haines

At the British Horse Society's Essex Annual Meeting on 30 Oct 07, Dr Phil Wadey, Trustee and Regional Access Officer, presented the Society's Awards. Katy Haines was one of the recipients. The Society is indebted to hundreds of volunteers who give unstintingly of their time, energy and expertise to furthering the care of horses in the areas of welfare, training, education, safety, and access and rights of way. The 'Special Achievement' Award is given to those who have made a substantial difference in the field of access and bridleways over an extended period of time.

For the last 18 years, Katy has been working nonstop, tirelessly and expertly for Essex County Council, creating over 40 off road routes that horse riders and others can enjoy. We were appalled that Katy's job to create bridleways was stopped by the Council earlier this year, but heartened that Katy is now working on the Mardyke Way for Thames Chase. Paths created include one here in Writtle and some with some great names, like the Nags Head Lane bridleway in Brentwood and the Dog and Partridge bridleway in Great Leighs. For exceptional achievement over many years we're proud to present Katy with this, not special but exceptional achievement award.

During the British Horse Society's Access Week 2000, the Society made local presentations to individuals, organisations and local authorities that had made positive contributions to equestrian access and rights of way. Simon Somers, BHS East of England Chairman, and Marlene Curis, BHS Access Officer, presented the Society's Awards. Katy Haines was one of the recipients.

The Society is delighted to present the awards to the County Council for its efforts to help get riders off the roads and out of traffic, through newly created bridleway routes. Katy Haines received an individual award to recognise her work on 'Ways Through Essex', and particularly for her efforts in establishing new bridleway routes to link the fragmented network in castle Point. It is hoped that some of these new routes will also form part of the Society's planned H12 long distance route.
