London Orbital Bridleroute (H25): Watford Rural 17

Council sign at start of path30 Sep 07: Watford Rural 17 gets widened
Hertfordhire Highways are widening Watford Rural 17 BW (previously reported as obstructed), which will make it a better route for all users. It may be closed for up to four weeks from 4 Mar 10 while works take place.

30 Sep 07: Illegal obstruction found on H25!

Illegal obstruction The British Horse Society today denounced the appearance of a barrier on the London Orbital Bridleroute. The barrier allows walkers and cyclists (just!) but not horses despite this path being a registered bridleway and signed as such by the County Council.

Phil Wadey, co-ordinator for the H25 in Hertfordshire, said, "It is appalling that someone has deliberately put barriers in the route of the H25. The Society, with other organisations and councils, has been working hard to record, develop and create the London Orbital Route as a contribution to the National Bridleroute Network, and no sooner than we think a section is legally protected than someone concretes metal barriers in the way.
We have called on the County Council to investigate and remove them forthwith."

28 Nov 07: After 8 weeks, HCC advise they have now "assigned" someone to deal with the obstruction.

11 Aug 00: Legal work completed for first landowner

The Society was delighted when Mr Kebbell agreed that the H25 could cross his land, starting at Delta Gain. The public path creation agreement to record a 3m wide bridleway here has now been completed. This leaves just two further landowners' sections to be recorded for the part of the H25 from Delta Gain to Prestwick Road.

The British Horse Society is promoting a scheme for a long distance riding route around Greater London, to be known as ‘The London Orbital Bridleroute’, or ‘H25’ for short. Once complete, the H25 will take its place amongst the other long distance rides in England like The Ridgeway. As the H25 opens, there will be more scope for the development of circular horse and cycle rides leading from the main route. Sections of the route in Hertfordshire are opening now, providing greater opportunities for riders, walkers and cyclists. Work on the Essex section started in July 1998.
