I have worked as a full time Consultant in Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery in the National Health Service and private practice, since 1992. After undergraduate medical training at the London Hospital Medical College, London I qualified in medicine in 1979. I then undertook training in surgery in the UK from 1980 to 1992, eight years of this being in Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery. I am fully accredited in Orthopaedic and Trauma surgery, being included in the General Medical Council specialist register.

Orthopaedics is the largest branch of surgery and comprises the management of disorders of the bones and joints, and their associated soft tissues. A large proportion of modern orthopaedic surgery involves the replacement of major joints which have been rendered painful by arthritis. "Trauma" is the management of all injuries involving the head, spine and limbs.

Most of my work is general adult Orthopaedic and Trauma surgery. I also provide the Paediatric (Childrens') Orthopaedic service to the catchment area of the Lister Hospital, Stevenage. My NHS appointment is at the Lister Hospital, Stevenage (part of the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust) where I undertake my routine orthopaedic and trauma practice. I undertake the majority of my private practice at Pinehill Hospital, Hitchin, Hertfordshire. This is a 40 bedded hospital fully equipped to carry out all routine orthopaedic surgical operations.

My special interests include:
·hip and knee replacement
·childrens' orthopaedics
·arthroscopy ("keyhole" surgery of the knee)
·anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction of the knee
·sports injuries
·management of back pain
·foot surgery
·hand surgery including Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Dupuytrens contracture
·reconstruction following trauma

I comply with the relevant codes of conduct and guidelines of the General Medical Council, the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the British Orthopaedic Association.

Annual workload (ie numbers of patients managed under my personal care):
· 660 surgical operations per year
· 484 routine orthopaedic operations
· 2200 outpatient appointments

Recent Audit and Research projects undertaken:
· survey of GPs' assessment of my orthopaedic service
