Some facts about Bone Cancer

Cancer that starts in the bone is known as primary bone cancer.
This is not the same disease as cancer that spreads to the bone from another part of the body
There are many different types of bone cancer, all of which are rare.

The exact causes of primary bone cancer are unknown.

Main symptoms of Bone Cancer

·        Pain in a bone and its surrounding area. The pain may begin as a dull ache that simply does not go away and gradually gets worse, possibly accompanied by a "hot" sensation in that area.

·        There may be a lump or swelling in the area.

·        Tiredness and weight loss.

Many of these symptoms can be associated to other conditions.

But a doctor should always be informed about persistent bone pain.

Treatments for Bone Cancer

·        Surgery

·        Chemotherapy

·        Radiotherapy

Often, a combination of some or all these treatments is needed

·        Limb sparing surgery:  here the affected bone is replaced with a bespoke metal prosthesis. This means that for some people, amputation can be avoided

·        Amputation
