Witness

Sandeep Sharma

You tell me that I'm not allowed to feel
For nameless people. This way! This is real!
I shall bear witness

You storm this God-given house of the world
Your guns are loaded. Hatred's flags unfurled
I shall bear witness

My sisters and brothers you would have me leave
To die! Go to another land to grieve
I shall bear witness

You think my acts foolishness or bravery
With these people's deaths you bind yourself to slavery
I shall bear witness

Yes. The freedom we seek is yours, not ours
And, in your hearts of stone we'll ever plant flowers
I shall bear witness

So, though your menaces do cause me fear
This is unchangeable. My place is here
I shall bear witness

I shall bear witness
Like Vyasa, in this blinding vale of tears
Till the end of days, I shall bear witness
To the travails of Socrates and Attilla
Of Biko and Hitler
Of Gandhi and Pol Pot
And all the unnamed, nameless ones
They, like we, live and die always for you
I shall bear witness

Peace and love
