Habit

Zelda Rhiando

Hand in hand beneath the sheets
they
revel
in one another's rancid farts;
the years passed, and neither
much interested in the passing
fancy.

Creaking bedsprings once a week
in clockwork motion speak of habit:
those and the sheets soft with much
washing
and the nightly restlessness of
bodies.

When the morning comes
they will leave such intimacy,
tucking it
mechanically beneath the sheets
of their life-time-guaranteed
nuptial
bed.
