Carrying a flag to mark his 500th marathon was Big Dave Carter, most of whose tattoos were hidden by his fancy dress, who was accompanied by his group of costumed supporters. The slight early morning drizzle had stopped before the start, the day steadily turned warm and sunny with little wind and any thoughts of Christmas aroused by the message “Claus” written on the road were dispelled. Claus Warsoe, the 10th placed Danish runner (3.10.41) UNZKAT, was weekending in Halstead with his calligraphic family. The winner was Brian Hennessey of Crawley AC in 2.46.46 with a six-minute lead over second placed Malcolm Packer of Louth AC who won the Vet +44 classification. Local runner Tracy Apps (3.28.18) 35+ vet was the first female runner home, beating her male Springfield Striders colleagues and Hilary Walker (3.31.03), Serpentine R.C. the first 45+ vet and former course record holder. Peugeot UK supplied the first 60+ male vet Philip Duffy in 3.32.29 closely followed in 3.35.35 by 60 + Roy Grew of 100 KM Association. The last finisher’s time of 6 hours 52 minutes was a triumph of her fortitude in the now hot sun. 2001 Race Results (16th September 2001) Eschewing the Great North Run, about 100 runners set out on a sunny morning for the seventh running of the Halstead Marathon through the picturesque undulating lanes on the Essex Suffolk border. It was however, the brisk northeast wind that prevented Susan Martin-Clarke (3.15.21. 13th overall) from beating the course record again. The visiting overseas runners from South Africa, Japan and Germany were led home by the winner Toby Meyer (2.54.16) whose pace judgement resulted in his overtaking faster starters. The performance of the day however was by Graham Baker an over 50 vet .who reduced his time from last year by a remarkable 21 minutes to take second place in 2.56.44. Graham a member of the Road Runners Club also achieved a PB on this demanding course. The bravest performance was by Kim Fearon-Howard, Southend AC, (5.25.31 and limping badly). Kim, who is have a knee ligament operation on Wednesday turned up to watch and was persuaded to run on the basis that she had run all the previous Halstead Marathons. Race Results Summary
