I offer workshops in narrative therapy according to demand, tailored to specific contexts, eg. as a module in a training course provided by another organisation, or as a narrative therapy workshop designed for a specific professional group.
The following examples may be modified according
to the needs of the participants:
ONE-DAY INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP
For counsellors and therapists who know little
or nothing about narrative therapy and wish to learn about some of the
philosophical and practical bases of this way of working. The workshop
also provides an opportunity to try out and experience some narrative therapy
practices.
TWO-DAY WORKSHOP
This workshop is for counsellors and therapists
who have attended an Introductory workshop or who already have some working
knowledge and experience of narrative and/or systemic therapy. Compared
with the Introductory Workshop this longer, more intensive learning unit
incorporates more detailed presentation and discussion of ideas informing
narrative ways of working. Practical experiential work includes taking
part in an Outsider Witness reflecting team, and there is a focus on how
each member might use narrative ideas in their work situation.
NARRATIVE COUNSELLING WITH COUPLES
Narrative therapy is particularly suited to couples counselling as it maintains a multi-viewpoint stance, and also takes social and cultural pressures on couples fully into account. Training can range from single-day workshops to an intensive course over three weekends at quite wide intervals, with learning tasks to complete between the modules.
Martin Payne, BA, Cert Ed., Diploma in Counselling
I am an independent counsellor working mainly
in GP surgeries. During my previous career in Further and Adult Education
I found my work was increasingly focussed on assisting students who were
experiencing problems in their lives. I trained in counselling at Colchester
Institute of Higher Education and gained their Diploma in Counselling.
I have completed Intensive Training in Narrative Therapy with Michael White
in Adelaide, South Australia, and am the author of Narrative
Therapy: an Introduction for Counsellors (Sage
Publications: Second Edition, 2006).
