DAVID EPSTON is co-director of the Family Therapy Centre in Auckland, New Zealand. His original training in anthropology has been an important element in the development of narrative therapy, especially by recognition of the therapeutic importance of rituals, and an emphasis on ways in which cultural influences affect beliefs and assumptions. It was Epston who suggested the ‘narrative’ metaphor for this therapy, at a time when it was establishing its practices and philosophy.

As well as many contributions to therapy journals David Epston is the author of Collected Papers (1989) and Catching Up With David Epston (1999, Dulwich Centre Publications). He co-edited Narrative Therapy in Practice: The Archaeology of Hope (1997: Jossey-Bass) with colleagues in New Zealand.  Narrative Means to Therapeutic Ends (1990: W.W.Norton), which he co-authored with Michael White, is the classic text on narrative therapy. Epston and White also co-authored Experience, Contradiction, Narrative and Imagination (1992: Dulwich Centre Publications).

MICHAEL WHITE is co-director of the Dulwich Centre in Adelaide, South Australia, which is a centre for therapy and for community action. He originally trained in social work and family therapy, developing new and original ideas and practices out of dissatisfaction with many of the ways of thinking and working traditionally found in those fields. He is the most prolific and influential figure in the development of narrative therapy. Michael White is the subject of many articles in the professional press, and draws large audiences on his overseas teaching tours.

His publications include:
