Bapton Limousin

Breeders of Pedigree Limousin Cattle.

Bapton Manor  is situated in the Wylye valley, tucked under the edge of the Salisbury plain in the English county of Wiltshire. At the turn of the century it was known world-wide for Shorthorn cattle, but is now the home of the Bapton herd of pedigree Limousins.

The herd was established in 1985 alongside the existing beef suckler and dairy herds on the 1600 acre Bapton Manor Farm.A large proportion of the current herd is descended from two outstanding cows of the original purchases, Hampton Petrushkaand Wintles Urania .

The selection of stock bulls has played a vital role in building up a herd of consistent type, appropriate to the current market for medium sized, well muscled cattle with good growth rates and temperament. The first bull of note was Glympton Bardot, a son of the French sire Talent, and out of a prolific Imported cow, Peseta. He was followed by  Haltcliffe Gladiator   who  did  a  tremendous  job  of  putting  size and uniformity  into  the  breeding  females  as  well  as  producing  several  very  good  sons,  particularly Bapton Javelin who was sold to Genus for A.I. use. The current stock bull is  Grange Linaria , purchased in the autumn of 1996 and his first progeny are looking very promising indeed. He is complementing the Gladiator daughters with a little more depth and some tremendous hind quarters.

 Some individuals worthy of note:-
Hampton-Petrushka.  Petrushka heads a large family which all combine performance, particularly calving ease and milking ability, with some great show characteristics.  She was the Grandam of Bapton Javelin, a very high performance bull which was sold to Genus for A.I. Use

Wintles Urania. s. Bedell-Maurice
d. Bedell-Nell
Urania produced our first homebred female, Bapron Bell by Oakley Polotician. She heads a long line of succesful show females, including most recentlyBapton Mandolin, who was shown very succesfully before selling to a breeder in Wales.

Haltcliffe Gladiator s. Broadmeadows-cannon
d. Haltcliffe Bracken
Calving Value LM1C                Beef Value  LM32

Gladiator was the highest ranked of all Cannon sons for growth rate, yet with no calving problems. He did an excellent job for us adding stature and uniformity to the breeding females in the herd.

Grange Linaria. s. Gabarit
d. Grange Galtonia
Calving Value  LM-1C              Beef Value   LM19

Linaria is a very big bull, both tall and wide.  The whole of the last two crops of calves are sired by him, the heifers being very consistent and his sons selling for £300 more than our previous average.

Bapton Midas.  s. Bapton Javelin
d. Bapton Iris
Calving Value  LM1C               Beef Value  LM34

Midas is now our second herd sire, covering the daughters of Linaria. His sire, Javelin, was sold to Genus for AI but sadly is no longer available.

Youngstock for sale.

These four young bulls were the first born to our new sire, Grange Linaria.

LATEST NEWS (9th Oct 2001)

We have desperately missed the showing this year, all cancelled due to the dreaded Foot & Mouth, but as I write there have been no new cases anywhere in the UK for 10 days so let's hope we have it licked at last.
We have just weaned the spring born calves this week and they are looking very good, especially one bull calf by Bapton Midas out of a Linaria heifer. He has a Beef Value in the top 1% of the breed and is very well muscled.  The cows have held condition well this summer and will need very little feed until they start calving again in the New Year.
The grain harvest was completed by mid September with the help of a second combine, and most of the autumn sowing is now done. The maize silage yielded particularly well, which will compensate for slightly disappointing yields of grass silage, though the quality of the latter is exceptional this year.
