The S.W. Limousin Cattle Breeders
Club.
The club was founded in 1975 by breeders of
pedigree Limousin Cattle in the English counties of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset,
Wiltshire and Dorset.
Our function is to promote the breed throughout
the region by arranging meetings, farm visits and auction sales, as well
as trade stands at local agricultural shows,
and to assist members in any way possible.
Club affairs are managed by a committe of
ten members selected by the full membership. The chairman is assisted
by an honorary secretary and treasurer.

Our members.
Membership
is open to anyone resident in the region who has an interest in Limousin
cattle, but over three quarters of our 90 members actually breed pedigree
limousins. Many are full time farmers, but a few have other employment
as well.
In total
our members own almost 1,000 breeding females, although individual herd
size is quite small ranging from just 3 or 4 cows up to 55 cows. They are
concentrated in Devon and Somerset, with a rising population in Cornwall
and a few herds in Wiltshire and Dorset. Most graze pasture during the
summer months and are housed during the winter.
Some of
our members have asked to be mentioned by name, and a few have their own
web site.
Our cattle.
It is widely
acknowledged that Limousin cattle in the South West are equal to others
anywhere else in the country. Many are descended from famous bloodlines
with both British and French origins. Some are performance recorded and
have full EBV's available.
Our
markets.
As this
area is best known for it's dairy herds a large proportion of the Limousin
bulls reared here have historicaly been used for cross breeding on Holstein
cows where they do an excellent job, but increasingly we are also finding
markets in other parts of the country where herds of beef suckler cows
are more common and where superior bulls with high performance figures
are eagerly sought.
The club holds auction sales at Hallworthy in Cornwall, Exeter in devon,
and now at Bristol, as well as transporting cattle to Society sales throughout
the country. Many cattle are of course sold privately direct from the farms
and the club secretary is always willing to assist customers in sourcing
suitable cattle.
