Dean Jakamarra Briscoe
Born c. 1970
Dean Jakamarra Briscoe was born in the early 1970's and is now working as a teacher
at Laramba where he lives now with his son. He has separated from his wife and moved to Laramba to
work in the school there but regularly travels between Alice Springs and Mt Allan (Pulardi) to visit
his homeland and family. Additionally Dean
is a keen footballer (Aussie Rules) and used to play for the Mt Allen Eagles.
Dean normally paints small paintings that represent bush tucker dreamings
(e.g witchetty grub, snake, bush berry etc) handed down to him by his parents
and gradparents from the Mt Allen area. His paintings have a characteristic
style and his paintings are very popular and have the added characteristic that
he writes the story on the back of the canvas.
His grandfather is Teddy Briscoe who is one of the elders at Mt Allan and who l
ives with his extended family at the Pulardi outstation. Teddy used to paint
frequently, however, since his stroke a number of years ago he has not painted much.
Here are some examples of the work by Dean Jakamarra Briscoe.
