“Hey
Ken, do you want to come to Peterborough for a night? Live music, and it's
really good!” was Owen’s promise. “Sure,” I said, “I'll never regret
it.”
Let’s start with the venue; the Norfolk. It's a medium sized pub devoted to music. As you enter the posters for live bands or sing-a-longs are instantly noticeable. All around the walls is music memorabilia. I could see this place had atmosphere. My first move, as always, was towards the bar. This, however, was interrupted by Owen realising that a member of the band was already present and setting up. A few words of greeting between us and we had our first round. They were in my good books before even a single note was played! (As a quick point here, it is important to mention that the Guinness at this place was second to only one other place I have found in England and I have looked very hard.)
After distributing Owen’s very nicely designed (though strangely beer-mat like) flyers for his Website, we found a seat close to the stage. Before the Music started we were greeted by the other two members of the band and entrusted with the care of a box of their well produced CD 'Now or Never'.
The music itself was most impressive, and I was amazed at how a band with such an array of very original music was not better known. Only one real glitch was suffered when a piece of equipment (the PA – Web-editor) decided to refrain from operating half way through the night. Luckily it was not the display which had the funky red light doing nightrider impersonations (John’s bass amp – Web-editor), or I would have been upset. After the band had stopped playing (and much Guinness was merrily flowing around my veins) we were given the task of helping the public to purchase CD's from the aforementioned box. This turned out to be not such a difficult task and we sold 13 (one was to me), with the money made going to charity.
I have to say that it was certainly a very good night and, although I didn't come away with drumsticks or a plectrum like my two friends, I do have the memories of the night, a wish to do it all again… oh and a signed CD.
