Now Or Never review by John of "grEMMLin."

"Now Or Never" is the first CD from this young band and as a first presentation it is a worthy effort.  Very Professionally produced with extensive sleeve material, the songs within have 'hooks' that stay with you immediately after first hearing.  All the lyrics are self-penned by Paul Stokes, the music a combination of effort from the whole band who comprise of, along with Paul Stokes on vocals, guitar and keyboard, John Peake on bass and backing vocals and Anthony McGuinness on drums and backing vocals.  The harmonies they create show a maturity which will develop as a strength to the material.  The content of the songs appears to be an album of self-searching ("Oh Well", opening track) and musical style references to apparent influences ('Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' in the opening of the title track "Now Or Never" and Lennon's "Well, Well, Well" somewhere in the body of it).  This doesn't lower the material's quality or mean that it's direct plagiarism or that it falls into some Oasis-type morass, just a show of respect to masters who've gone before.  Nor is this album another attempt to jump on the Beatles Revival Bandwagon, there are elements of Elvis Costello's "Shipbuilding", too ("Time Will Heal") that shows this band to have been aware of what's been going on around them for a long time.
All the tracks are powerful and well constructed with strong harmony vocals and fills at the right places whether they be "rockers or smoochers" (for want of a better description) although I did feel some were getting a bit similar in approach somehow.  Not a great problem at present but may present itself as such at a later date if the subject matter is not expanded.  (Although to be fair the eight tracks presented on the album do have a consistency of style that brings coherence to the whole - a difficult balancing act to achieve, really).
All in all, as a first offering they have done well, very danceable and at the same time listenable which should make it popular to a wide audience.
