In May 2004 I attended a three day workshop, carving stone from Zimbabwe under the tutelage of two Zimbabwian sculptors
This is the piece I completed. The stone is Serpentine - Fruit Stone.

Back view ... this shows what the raw stone looks like before work, The 'hair' is stone just finished with the claw. The fingers of the hand appear to disappear under the hair. |

The shine is achieved by flatting with various grades of 'wet and dry' worked wet, down to 1200 grade. The work was heated and then wax polish liberally applied, allowed to cool and burnished with a soft cloth. |
