A Burial Cask and Head Stone for Sally

Katie's daughter Sally died in March 1999, and was cremated. In early 2000 I made a cask for her ashes which is now buried in the cemetery at St Peter's Church, North Hayling, it is marked by a small Head Stone carved in mid 2000.

The Cask

I used Oak mainly reclaimed from some old attic flooring in our house. Katie chose the words and theme which is "Dream Catcher".

The dimensions were 9 inches by 9 inches by 18 inches.

The Head Stone

The stone was a slab of French Limestone bought in a Brocante in Fougeres. It was a little oversize so I had it cut at the Chichester Cathedral Works to the exact dimensions required.

The lettering and emblem were similar to that carved on the Cask. Katie guilded the lettering and then the stone was given several coats of Linseed Oil before being laid in the Cemetery.

View of carved Headstone

The stone was carved with a fairly shallow relief and lettering at about 90 degrees to allow guilding.

The stone has not been treated at this stage
