Some years ago I went on an excellent weekend course with Oliver Plant near Honiton to learn how to use a woodturning lathe. Since then I have spent many happy hours preparing turned items for sale at fairs or to commission.
I started carving wood and took tuition from my good friend Ray White of Portsmouth. My interest and experience was deepened when I did wood and stone carving as part of a BTec at Portsmouth University.
I generally work in our Conservatory where the light is excelent!
Now I am pleased to say I work part-time as the tutor of Architectural Carving at Portsmouth University, School of Art, Design and Further Education.
The particular course which I teach is part of Decoration and Restoration Studies. This was the BTec N D course mentioned above but now upgraded to an HND two year course, followed by a BA (Hons) year.
The basic principles of Architectural carving are covered from the first principles. Our students typically have never done any woodwork, nor used any of the machinery. All students do a three day (15 hour) session at the start of their second year, during which they carve a 30cm section of cornice with cresting.

Those that wish to continue for the remainder of the year, get the opportunity
to do their own work in the workshop, on a series of progressive
architectural pieces. They may then work on an individual piece of work
in readiness for the exhibition.

Some years ago I joined the Solent Guild of Wood Carvers and Sculptors. As well as going to meetings and 'carve-ins', members of the Guild exhibit and demonstrate at several local Country Shows and Vintage Car Rallies etc.
As I had already set up one Web site for a local group, I offered to build and maintain a site for the Guild and it is gradually growing.
In consequence of my interest and the fact that publicity information is shown on the Guild's Web site I was asked if I would take over Publicity for the Guild, and was co-opted onto the council for that purpose. In 1999 I was elected Vice-Chairman of the Guild, and then had the honour of being its Chairman for a term.
