Madalena is a small community established over 800 years ago but now within the southern boundary of Vila Nova de Gaia (the lesser known twin to Porto), these two cities being divided by the River Douro.  Though Gaia continues to develop (in the way of cities everywhere), it is quiet and still includes small rural areas and stands of trees.  Cobbled roads are not unusual and original farmhouses still exist amongst newer housing.  The outstanding feature is it’s beaches, two of the continuous series of Blue Flag beaches that line the coast of Gaia.  Most visitors are local Portuguese and it normally only gets crowded at weekend, especially in summer. Outside of holiday periods, the beaches are refreshingly clear during the week .  This is also true of the cafes, bars and restaurants that sit on the beach.

Porto features the cool-summer Mediterranean climate. As a result, it's climate shares many characteristics with the coastal south: warm, dry summers and mild, rainy winters.
